With much fanfare, we build flyovers in Mumbai. The one basic purpose the flyover is supposed to serve is ease the traffic.
The assurance given is smooth flowing traffic and no traffic jams.
Lets take the example of the J.J. Hospital Flyover.
When it was being built, the 2.4 Km long Flyover built by Gammon India, was intended to reduce the congestion and smoothen traffic, not only on the flyover but also below it.
Whats actually happened is that the travel time for users of the flyover has come down from 30 minutes to about 5 minutes. Commendable! Yes
But what happened below the flyover tells a tale.
The B.M.C appointed contractors to allow parking of vehicles below the Flyover. Some enterprising contractor started to allow parking on both sides of the footpath.

The Traffic Police, for reasons best known to them, turned a blind eye. Thus, soon enough, there was three-tier parking on the road. One below the flyover and the other two on both sides of the footpath. The Traffic Police mysteriously enough,  tows vehicles parked in alleys and bylanes, but will not touch the vehicles parked on the road.

The road from V.T to J.J. Hospital is a narrow road. When vehicles are parked on the road itself, traffic jams is a natural consequence.
Congestion below the flyover is exactly as before.

South Africa beat the Aussies 2-1 in the recently concluded one day series.
I wonder what happened to the fabled bench strength of the Aussies.
There was a time when the reserve strength of the Aussies could beat, so it was said, the national team of the opposition.
True, the Greats of the game can never be replaced and the space Shane Warne, Gilchrist, Mark Taylor and others have vacated can never be filled.
But the Aussies had a strong bench strength.
Whither have they gone, pray?

Varun Gandhi considers that the Hindus are  ’under siege’ and has appealed to the nation to stand by him. He thinks that Hindus are ‘living under fear’ and ‘three temples have been vandalised in the block in which I am supposed to have given the speech’

Now, I was always under the impression that the minority community (read Muslims) were under seige in India. Varun has a new take on that.

I wonder what the reactions would be if a Muslim leader from Gujarat were to have given the same speech and substituted in Varun Gandhi’s speech “Hindu”  for  “Muslim”.

The Other Gandhi, the Mahatma of India, was a Hindu and a Bania to boot, but can anybody recall him in that fashion. In fact, if one visits states as far flung as Meghalaya or Assam, they are quite surprised to note that he was a Gujrati. They can think of him only as the Father of the Nation.

This Gandhi, although much more goodlooking than him, is a pale shadow of the real thing.

There have been many attempts to demolish the secular fabric of the Constitution of India. That a Gandhi, a scion of Nehru, has also been adding to the push, only adds to the misery.

Per the Holy Bible : “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” And then the Lord God went on creating myriad things of nature and beheld that they they were rather good and He was truly satisfied.

In the scheme of His things He also created man and Lo! He felt man was rather alone without a mate. (I suppose it will be considered blasphemy if I were to suggest that the Lord God is rather alone too!)

So He created Eve.

And the couple was told not to have the apple of knowledge for they would surely die.

I think what the Lord God was trying to say in His matter-of-fact way, was that the apple would lead to them falling in love with each other. (Die was an euphemism for love, for when you are in love, your lonely self truly dies.)

For consider that once they have had the apple they realize the difference in their proportions and cover themselves.

I think this seed of hiding one’s true emotions vis-a-vis love started right at the top.

If the Lord God had simply said : “Let there be love”, we would be saved the turmoil of hiding our emotions on Vday.

And our moral guardians would have other worthwhile things to do.

Atal Behari Vajpayee was always tagged as the right man in the wrong party.
Posterity will judge him as a truly nice man with enough virtues to be charming.
However his name was a misnomer. Atal means steadfast, which he never was.
His constant vacillations on points of principle are legendary.
He stood for no principle as such but for the principle of compromise.
The truth is always a tight rope walk and being a BJP man, Atal Behari Vajpayee always gave it a wide berth.
